Smith Wesson 29 - Mike Morton goes into Dirty Harry mode and grabs a pellet-shooting Smith & Wesson Model 29 so he can unleash some magnum power on his target
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 was introduced in 1955. Chambered in .44 Magnum, a pistol cartridge that provided muzzle velocity and energy greater than anything seen before, the M29 sold in droves.

Smith & Wesson saw a huge sales jump in 1971 with the release of Dirty Harry, the first of five films in which Clint Eastwood played the tough, no-nonsense Inspector "Dirty" Harry Callahan of the San Francisco Police Department.

Although cartridges can be loaded one at a time, it's faster - and more fun - to load all six with the optional speed loader
Umarex M29 is available in BB or Pellet format. The revolver here is a rifle barrel pellet lighter and costs £219.95. The BB version is available in three barrel lengths, namely 3", 6.5" and 8 3/4", with the pellet fired version offered in 6.5" and 8 3/4". In keeping with the original Smith & Wesson design, the Umarex M29 can also available in a steel finish, this variant is known as the 629, following the company's strategy of prefixing the model number with a '6' to denote a stainless finish. The Umarex 629 Pellet Burner with a 6.5" barrel costs £239.95.

Which one should you choose? Well, if you want to pick up an authentic Dirty Harry pellet fire replica, you need the blue finish, but you can have both. The gun Eastwood carries in the film has a 6.5" barrel, while the one used in some promotional photos has a longer 8 3/4" barrel, probably because it looks more attractive. However, things get more complicated. Apparently, because the Smith & Wesson Model 29 was so popular, Eastwood had to use an entirely different weapon when it came time to open fire on the bad guys. Instead of the Model 29 he had to shoot the look-alike S&W M57 because there were no .44 Magnum blanks available for the Smith & Wesson Model 29!

The wood-faced grip includes the Smith & Wesson logo and the powder-fired Model 29 brass screw.
This detent activates the safety in the rear position and releases the swing cylinder out when pushed forward
The 6.5-inch example is 308mm long and tips the scale at 1,145g, making it fairly long and only 131 grams lighter than the original's 1,276g.
Umarex has a proven track record in reproducing CO2 powered replica firearms and the Smith & Wesson Model 29 is no exception. It's an all-metal build apart from the grips, and the frame and barrel have been given a dark blue finish that looks colorful in certain lighting conditions.

One criticism is the fact that the handle is made of plastic when it should be made of wood. The plastic wood look is well made, but it would have been nicer, albeit more expensive, if a gun of this quality had been fitted with a real solid wood grip.
A full-color S&W logo is inlaid on both sides, but the faux screw heads have been left in wood-look plastic instead of the original brass. It would be a fun project - if this gun were mine - to drill out the non-functioning plastic screw heads and replace them with real hollow brass screws.
The left grip pops out to reveal the CO2 charge chamber and the Allen key that activates the piercing screw is an integral part of the grip
As with most other CO2 revolvers, the left grip pops up to reveal the CO2 loading chamber. The groove screws are screwed in using an Allen key, which has been very cleverly integrated into the handle so that it is always at hand when you need it.

The safety is located on the left side of the frame and is designed to be operated with the right thumb. I have very small hands and have to hold the gun with both hands to operate the bolt because the gun is so big. In the rear position, the lock locks the trigger and hammer, while the forward position puts the weapon into firing mode. You also have to hold the breech forward to swing the cylinder out so you can load the M29.
Despite its weight, the cylinder does not swing open on its own because it is securely attached to the frame and requires little persuasion with pressure from the right side. With the drum now swung to the left, the six dummy .44 Magnum cartridges can either be extracted individually or removed en masse with the extractor.
I was pleased to see that this framed cartridge is the same dimensions as the original, with a case length of 32.6mm and a cartridge length of 41mm including the dummy bullet. That's a lot of attention to detail.
One pellet is loaded into a rubber seal on the back of each cartridge and although the Umarex illustration shows a Wadcutter pellet, any .177 pellet will fit. When all six cartridges are filled with pellets, they can be put back into the barrel. This is usually done individually, but an optional speed loader is available from Umarex for £14.95.

This device allows you to insert all six and then release them together by pressing a spring device on the back of the cylinder. It works exactly as intended, but I like to load each one because such a rifle is as much a tactile experience as it is a shooting experience.
When you pick up the gun it's very heavy, but a solid grip can keep it stable, and like some airguns, the extra weight can actually be an advantage because it's easier to keep it over the target for short periods of time.
With the safety pushed forward, the cylinder can swing out and six .44 Magnum cartridges can be loaded nose first
I experimented with several types of pellets, ending up with a JSB Exact Express and shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 29 backed in a sack, kneeling and shooting standing in 1 and 2 hand positions. Sights can be seen clearly as the front sight has a deep orange insert like the original and the rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation.
Smith & Wesson Mod.29
I have shot a Smith & Wesson Model 29 at 6m and 10m and found the sights out of the box to be fine for drag but shoot a bit low at both ranges but are easy to adjust with a flat head screwdriver.
The trigger is heavy, coming in at around 7lbs 6oz in single action mode with the hammer pulled back and a groaning 10lbs 1oz in double action mode. This isn't really a bad thing, however, as owners of powder-burning M29s report average pull weights of around 3 pounds and 10 pounds, respectively.
About gun accuracy? At six meters silent in single action mode, the Umarex M29 is capable of firing six rounds of 25mm groups, with the group size expanding to 40mm at 10 meters. My kneeling group is no bigger, but when shooting in double action I had to increase the target size to my rabbit head spinner.
The .44 Magnum dummy cartridge happily accepts standard domehead pellets, giving enough flexibility to test different types
Smith & Wesson's Model 29 Is Not For Everyone, But Boy Is It Powerful
After 42 shots - seven cylinders' worth - there was a drop in muzzle velocity, but the M29 fired twice as many pellets with reasonable accuracy.
A definite pause between the details of removing the "exhausted" case and reloading may help as the CO2 has a chance to return to ambient temperature. For an unmoderated gun, it's pretty quiet outside, while naturally louder when firing inside.
As far as CO2 cannon replicas go, it's hard to ask for more. The Umarex licensed M29 is faithful to the original, especially in terms of looks, size and weight.
Dirty Harry promises that the .44 Magnum M29 can blow your head off, but while the air rifle version certainly can't, this beautiful pellet-shooting monster might surprise you.

Umarex has done it again and produced an excellent pistol replica. Just like the original, it's big and heavy, but if you want one for your collection, go ahead; It will make your day. Here's something to keep in mind: Gun weight is usually a double-edged sword: while lighter guns are generally more comfortable to carry, heavier guns absorb recoil better and are easier on the user.
