WASHINGTON – For years, it's been a running joke in defense circles that directed energy systems – commonly known as lasers – are the technology of the future and always will be. However, after conducting a series of successful live tests of its new Iron Beam capability, Israel is moving forward with the hope of putting an end to this joke, perhaps within two years.

Iron Beam is a free feature of Rafael's Iron Dome defense system, which uses kinetic barriers to protect Israel from incoming rockets, mortars and small drones. Michael Lurie, the incoming CEO of Rafael USA, told Breaking Defense in a recent interview that fire tests six months ago convinced the IDF to continue funding the project after decades of laser experiments. "We no longer have a technical or scientific problem ... it's a technical problem now. The science is there, and we've shown it works," Lurie said. "It's not a question of whether we're going to do it or not. It's a question of when, for how long. The IDF wants it to work today and tomorrow. But I think it's realistic that it will take two to three years from where we are now to get a functioning system up and running. ".

Lurie emphasized that the Iron Beam will never fully replace the Iron Dome. Instead, Israel is seeking to unite the two. The existing Iron Dome infrastructure - all the back-end system that makes the targeting decision - will remain in place. In practice, if all goes well, the Iron Beam would be another option the system could use against future threats.

And the system must take into account real trade-offs. A kinetic grappler can destroy a target on impact, while a laser requires you to hold the target for a certain amount of time, and a few seconds of operation can cause trouble. And if the weather is bad, it can render the laser system ineffective against incoming targets.

On the other hand, when the laser is traveling at the speed of light, the kinetic grapple takes time to reach the target and does not need to be re-delivered. The cost savings of using a laser system compared to manufacturing and purchasing kinetic grippers is significant. According to Lurie, the biggest problem with the "Iron Dome" is the "economics", which was the main reason for the push for a focused energy alternative.

Lurie declined to comment on the Iron Beam's range, but a company release says it is "several miles." The effect of the system can vary depending on how strong the beam is and where it is directed; He said that in some cases the object explodes, in others it simply shuts down and falls out of the sky. (Israeli sources previously told Breaking Defense that the project would use two laser projectors to generate the necessary power and would need a 1-megawatt beam to succeed.)

As for why the Iron Beam might work after three decades of failed laser experimentation, Lurie pointed to several unique factors. First, advances in lasers, largely driven by the commercial world, have made the system more efficient. Second, the decision to integrate this into the Iron Dome removed many of the difficulties of a stand-alone system. Since it is a non-mobile system, weight and power concerns are limited.

As is always the case with Iron Dome technology, there is an export permit check in Israel. But Lurie said Raphael was "talking to a certain [US] company" to sell it to the Pentagon. He expressed his confidence in the company's preparation plan if Israel switches to the system after the International Olympic Committee.

"Manufacturing is a long-term product and logistics. We have a production line. "It's a matter of when we can order those long lead products and start manufacturing these systems," he said, adding that global supply chain issues were a "factor to consider."

The decision to create a ground-based, non-mobile system made the Iron Beam perhaps the most easily targeted energy installation. But as the technology advances and test cases like Iron Beam prove themselves, Lurie said he expects the technology to spread in new ways in the coming years.

"I think a lot of times everybody is trying to look at higher energies, shorter capture times, mobile systems, marine systems," he said. "I don't think we can imagine where this will lead. When we prove that it actually works, the ideas and interpretations that armies come up with will amaze everyone.
