Staccato Pistol Models - The revolver was a staple of American law enforcement for most of the 20th century, but the Model 1911 served well here too. Officers who choose to carry anything other than a .38 Spl. or .357Mag. He often patrolled the streets with an M1911. With a .45 ACP round in the chamber and another seven or eight magazines, the M1911 offered excellent serviceability up to that point.
But everything wasn't perfect. The 1911's single-action "sock and lock" trigger was considered dangerous by some police commanders. As a result, 1911s are sometimes considered specialty weapons and assigned to SWAT units in the belief that advanced training is required to carry one safely. As parts began ripping off the revolver en masse, gun companies used marketing terms like "reliable action" to get into the minds of executives concerned about the 1911's safety.

In the commercial market, it continued to reign as America's weapon through 1911, competing with baseball, Apple Pie, and Chevrolet. The pistol has spawned generations of gunsmiths who modify and customize weapons to suit their carry or competition needs. As demand for civilian 1911s grew, so did the number of handgun companies. In hindsight, it made sense for manufacturers to finally cut corners and offer a pistol with many of the features previously added by custom gunsmiths.

Raised beavertail grip security, extended toe security, and more useful finishes have become industry standard items. It also made sense for someone to turn a one-column 1911 magazine into a stunning column. These "biplane" designs retained the traditional slide and barrel but adapted them to frames that offered double the ammunition capacity. Several companies have made higher capacity 1911s, most notably the popular Staccato 2011 design developed and patented by Strayer-Tripp International.
What separates the 2011 from other high-performing 1911s is the frame. To keep the frame width at a comfortable and usable size, STI eliminated the clamp plates and clamp bolts and added clamp structure to the entire polymer frame extension. This frame extension bolts to the top of machined steel. In fact, this gives the STI frame a degree of modularity, as the lower polymer grip unit can be swapped out for a different color or texture. The STI's steel frame section includes slide rails and slotted holes for hammers, seekers, connectors and fuses. It is serialized and counts as a weapon.

STI started as the brainchild of two men, Sandy Strayer and Virgil Tripp. Over time, Tripp and Strayer were separated and the STI brand was sold. With the change of ownership, the brand was expanded to include complete pistols as well as parts and accessories for specialist gunsmiths. The company then changed hands again with the Staccato name change. Along with the name change, the company changed its marketing strategy. Custom frames, slides, and other parts are no longer available. The focus is now on making full factory pistols for law enforcement use.

Staccato's next weapon is called the Staccato 2011 P. The "P" stands for Professional and follows the company's marketing strategy to promote the miniature P model as the number one choice for law enforcement. Promotional materials and Staccato promotional videos show law enforcement officers practicing at firing ranges with Staccato pistols. These officers are seen later and from center responding to each call with these pistols. The promotion is paid for and Staccato P is licensed or approved for use with at least 500 episodes at the time of writing this article.
The Staccato P is chambered in 9mm Luger. What most people would call the Commander dimension. That means the pistol has a full-size frame and a barrel that's less than 5 inches long. But unlike the standard Commander, which has a slightly shorter slide travel, the Staccato P has the same slide travel as a 5-inch pistol. This extra slide travel gives the magazine spring more time to push the rounds up the magazine tube, resulting in a more reliable pistol. The barrel profile uses direct pairings and an integrated feed ramp without the use of a heavy and removable barrel groove. The retractable spring guide bar features Staccato's tool-less removal system. This allows the owner to throw the pistol without the need for a bent paper clip or the small pieces of wire that some other guide rods require.
The slide is available in two versions. The standard 2011 P-style adjustable rear sight is round and deep in the slide. The 2011 P Optic Ready comes with the rear sight mounted on its own plate attached to the slide. The plate and rear sight are removable, allowing the use of a variety of slide-mounted optics. Adapter plates are manufactured by Dawson Precision and CHPWS and are available from Staccato's website. Between these companies, there should be a plate available for every slide optic on the market today. For this test we used the Staccato 2011 P Optic Ready with Leupold DeltaPoint Pro and Holosun HE509T-RD. Switching from one optic to the other was straightforward and easy to do with simple hand tools.
As with the original STI, the Staccato 2011 frame is still made up of two separate pieces. The steel powder coating of the frame is now iron finished to mount the lens. Frame controls are in common 1911 and 2011 ships with mooring security. Staccato redesigned the magazine and changed the magazine frame to work more reliably with the 9mm Luger. Older STI magazines are not interchangeable. The texture on the frame's compression surface is pretty good out of the box, but some users might want something a little more aggressive. The entire strap can easily be used, or the polymer grip casing can be removed and textured by someone skilled in retexturing polymer frames.

Range and accuracy tests were conducted using a mix of aluminum, brass, and steel bullets. Nothing surprising happened. Anyone familiar with a 1911 or 2011 STI should have no trouble with staccato. Our test sample had a regular 4.25 liter trigger break. with a slight shift of about half. When shooting fast, that little flash goes completely unnoticed and doesn't affect performance or accuracy in any way. Accuracy was, frankly, excellent, and the Staccato is one of the most accurate P-Type weapons.
Velocity measurements are an average of 10 shots taken 15 feet from the lip with a Caldwell G2 chronograph.
However, there are downsides. The Staccato P is a custom pistol assembled from quality parts. It's expensive, but the durability is basically on par with a standard pistol. The weapon is also heavy. With a full magazine, deferred optics and pistol grip, the Staccato P weighs just over 3 pounds. Matching the Glock 17 with its light, optical and full magazine capacity, the 12 oz. lighter. Staccato has just started offering an aluminum frame model that will shed some weight.
As it turns out, the 1911 may not be as dangerous as we once thought. Thumb discipline and proper use of the trigger safety make the 1911 and 2011 as carefree unloading safe as anything else. Proper training and a good understanding of the four safety rules are more important than disabling officers with serious injuries to avoid unexpected layoffs. There are a number of ways law enforcement officers might want to upgrade the Staccato P to mission capability. These include Safariland, Blackhawk and USA Duty Gear. All three companies offer holster options that can accommodate the pistol with slide-mounted optics and a gun light.
