Smith Wesson 22 - The Smith & Wesson Model 22 is a 6-shot, double-action, large-frame revolver chambered in .45 ACP using moon clips. It is an improved commercial version of the M1917 revolver first issued during the First World War.
Built around the Smith & Wesson large N frame, it was originally sold as the Model 1950 and was typically fitted with a 5½" lugless barrel and fixed battle sights. The Model 25 and Model 26 were the "Target" models.

The Model 22 was reintroduced as the second Thunder Ranch revolver in limited production in 2007. This pistol features a 4" match barrel with a fixed front sight under the ear, cocobolo grips, and an internal lock. The popularity of this revolver led S & W i continue to produce it in its classic line as a 22-4 revolver. It is a fairly accurate revolver and has a smoother trigger pull than the original, most likely due to manufacturing improvements. A limited run of bright nickel plated, non- Thunder Ranch models were made. Only select firearms dealers considered authorized to sell this particular model. A limited number of Model 22's were made in hard coat (body color) by Turnbull Restorations. They were available in 4" and (number limited ) Barrel length 5.5". The coating made by Turnbull is a true hardened coating, not the chemical wash coating found on firearms from other manufacturers.

The Model 22 was designed to fire .45 ACP pistol cartridges using moon clips. It will release the .45 ACP cartridges into the chambers without the use of moon clips, but since the extractor cannot measure the rimmed cartridges, empty cases must be discarded with a cleaning rod or pike.
It can also use Auto Rim .45 as they are designed for revolvers chambered in .45 ACP using moon clips. The Model 22 can also fire the newer .45 GAP cartridge, but only with the use of moon clips. Among Smith & Wesson's most attractive recent offerings is the M&P22 Compact. This pistol is similar to the 9mm Shield, but is mechanically different.
Smith and Wesson claims that they have a strong commitment to this line of pistols and that their team pays close attention to reliability and quality standards.
Their claims are correct. The gun features a hard anodized 7075 TG51 aluminum slide. The frame is a modern polymer.

The result is a good looking gun that doesn't feel cheap, even though it is affordable. As a result of the construction of the gun, it weighs 15.3 ounces.
The fit of the gun is excellent. Most hand sizes find the military and police .22s to be well balanced and shoot quickly.
The 18 degree grip angle - meaning the grip is at an 18 degree angle to the bore line - provides good orientation.
This is a fun drill - shoot the smaller silhouette of the B27 at 10 yards. The M&P22 is very accurate for most tasks.

The gun uses a conventional recoil spring and guide rod. The operation, cutting and handling is simple enough, and the trigger cuts cleanly.
The magazines are well made, ten rounds. I like the magazines better than the usual cheap polymer or tin magazines.
Some .22s look cheap, but not this gun. The design is not a blinker first and foremost, it is designed for personal defense practice.
Likewise, the gun is very accurate for informal target shooting and ticking. It is also accurate enough to have utility in the field.

I took a small game with less accurate guns. It will easily subdue a reptile or pick up a lying rabbit.
Tactical features include ergonomic, ambidextrous safety and clear trigger. The rear sight is fully adjustable and the front post is clearly visible.
These days, there is an effort to design pistols that are easy to use by shooters with limited arm strength, including the elderly.
As far as personal defense goes, the .22 Long Rifle doesn't have the mass or diameter of a bullet, but it can have adequate penetration in most situations.

My point is, if I can't use at least a .38 Special or a 9mm Luger, I'll just as soon be using a reliable .22. The M&P22 is a reliable .22, and that's a big deal!
Not long ago, it was unusual to fire a 500-round brick of .22 LR without suffering a bit of misfire or a round with a bullet bending sideways in the feed ramp.
I was recently part of a group that fired almost 2,000 rounds of .22 LR without a single misfire or misfeed. In my experience this is unusual.
M&P magazines are easy to load and prepare. Also, the gun slide is easy to fit.

I started shooting the affordable Winchester Wildcat, a reputable 40-grain load. I fired several boxes with good results.
Firing at man-sized targets from five, seven and ten yards, the little Smith was easy to maneuver and hit the mark quickly.
For practice shooting for personal defense, this is a good gun. The gun hits the mark and performs well.
For those who have trouble handling a loud gun, the M&P22 is a good all-around gun for both defense and recreation - except for the caliber, but then the LR .22 is a serviceable cartridge.

When used as a field weapon, the M&P22 is easier to use and more accurate than most pistol-style revolvers.
If you're using a .22 for personal defense, a ten-shot autoloader is leagues ahead of a rimfire revolver.
Then I tested the gun for absolute accuracy. Shooting from a solid, upright barricade position, I fired several five-shot groups at 15 yards.
I used a Winchester Wildcat and also a 37-grain Winchester Super X hollow. A 16oz gun is not the easiest to hold, but the gun gave good results.
Smith & Wesson Model 17
Most five-shot groups were within two inches or less. With a fully adjustable pistol rear sight, the M&P22 is a great field pistol.
I test a lot of modern pistols. While I sometimes think that modern pistols are getting better, there are also many guns made as cheaply as possible and others that make us wonder what the designer was thinking.
Whether for use as a basic handgun, or for practice or field use, the new Smith and Wesson is a great addition to anyone's safe.
I have used the TruGlo battle light with good results. It fits the rail and offers good performance for the money.

I don't recommend using a gun in a holster other than the one it was designed for, but in this case, close enough works well for a field gun.
